Magic as a popular form of art can be broadly categorized into three major categories based on the audience size and the type of equipment being used. Magic can be classified as Close-up magic, Conjuring and Illusions. Close-up magic is the form of magic in which the magician or the performer performs to a small number of audiences usually in the range of one to twenty persons. This form of magic is performed at very close quarters with some of the members of the audience seated as close as a couple of feet away from the magician. This type of magic may involve sleight of hand or very small props or magic accessories such as some coins or a pack of cards or thimbles and other such items. Close-up magic can be performed at restaurants or at informal gatherings or for an impromptu audience. Conjuring magic is the form of magic in which the magician performs for medium-sized audiences of say ten to hundred or sometimes even more people. In the Conjuring form of magic the magician uses few props that can be easily moved around or can be carried on a person. Some of the props in conjuring are the Changing bag, Egg bag, Jumbo cards and other such items. Though many of the conjuring items are self working some other items may need knowledge of body loading, misdirection and load stealing and may require some practice. Conjuring magic is sometimes called as Stage Magic or Parlor magic. The magician may typically perform a stage magic or conjuring magic at birthday parties, anniversary celebrations or other such gatherings. Illusions are the form of magic in which the magician performs for large audiences using large props that are easily visible to hundreds of audiences. Some of the famous Illusions are that of vanishing the Statue of Liberty or any other such large objects, sawing a lady into half and other such effects. Many of the illusions revolve around gimmicked boxes to enable appearing, disappearing, penetration, twisting, etc. This form of magic usually require a very good stage presence on the part of the magician and most often some assistants. A new entrant into the popular form of magic typically begins with Close-up magic, then graduates onto Conjuring magic and then finally into Illusions.
