Three basic equipments that you will need while making a documentary!

If you have a passion for making documentaries then it is very important to understand and realize the fact there is no rocket science required to do that. What you basically need is some passion, basic know how of the equipment, and detailed research on the topic that you want to film. For passion and research material, you are on you own, but we can help you with information regarding the equipments.

The recording equipments are very expensive and perhaps you would not afford to buy them, but this should not stop you from taking your first step. You can, of course get them on rent. For the beginners, there would be no need for sophisticated editing software, fancy lights, and helping staff. A good camera, simple sound system, and lights is all you need to begin, of course excluding the research material you need to cover your story.

Lights to highlight:

Human eye and camera lens respond differently to the light. The light which might appear fine to us would appear too dull when looking from a camera lens. Therefore make sure that your location is well lit and be careful about the angle of light. Lighting expert can also share some very valuable tips with you, so do talk it out with the experienced people of this field. Getting lights on rent is a better idea because they are good for the indoor or controlled shooting, which has very little to do with the documentary making.

Sound equipment:

Even if you are a beginner, remember that good sound quality is as important as a good story, otherwise all of the efforts spent on making the images impressive would go down the drain. You need both wireless microphone and a shotgun microphone, for outdoor shootings windscreen would save you a lot of annoying retakes and editing. It is somewhat affordable to have your own sound system, both wireless and shotgun microphone would cost you well under 1000 pounds.

Cameras and accessories:

For documentary making, high quality camera is a must. With fine picture quality, 3-chip camera is recommended. It would be wonderful if you can get your hands on an HD camera. Buying such a precious little gadget would be too hard for the beginners, and there are ways to deal with it, you can either hire a professional cameraman or just rent a good camera to film your documentary. The camera size has lately got smaller, so the handling does not require proper training.

So, that’s all you’d need to make a documentary that might bring you instant fame and more importantly, the inner satisfaction.
